Modified Optical Properties with Ion Beam Irradiation

Profile of the refractive index change in lithium niobate after irradiation with 40 MeV 3He Ions.

The division Solid State Optics investigates the modifications of electrical and optical parameters in optical materials, which are caused by the irradiation with high energetic ions.

In praticular we lay focus on the materials lithium niobate and lithium tantalate and the changes of the refractive index, the conductivity and the poling behaviour. The crystals are irradiated at the Bonn Isochronous Cyclotron with normally 40 MeV 3He Ions or 50 MeV alpha particles.
